Dr. Andrea Tesher, one of our Psychologists in Ridgewood, NJ
How is your approach to therapy different from that of someone who practices a more psychoanalytic approach?
It's much more structured, more evidenced based, and it uses certain tested techniques that have been shown to be effective. We rely on more patient-therapist collaboration --- so both the therapist and client are doing work in session and out. The client can expect to do homework outside of the therapy session. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is very upfront, so everything is always explained to the client. The ultimate goal is education; to have the client learn techniques and skills to use outside the session.
What is the typical length of an engagement with a patient?
CBT is meant to be a short term treatment. Sometimes they can be as few as twelve sessions. But it definitely depends on the client. The goal is to teach the client to use the techniques on their own. But it could be more depending on the client’s needs. At first you work on basic skills and then as therapy progresses you can go towards deeper issues.
Can you explain how CBT can help a patient overcome their fears and change behaviors?
CBT can help clients learn how to challenge the thoughts that are producing intense negative emotions. It can change the way a person thinks about something feared and their ability to cope with their worst feared outcome. A client will be guided to approach fears, rather than avoid them, and will discover that with more exposure to something feared, the less anxiety it will produce.
What motivated you to get into this line of work?
I always enjoyed working with and helping people. When I began taking psychology courses in college I knew it was for me. After graduating from college I enrolled in a General Psychology Masters program to further explore all the possible careers in psychology. I quickly found that I wanted to concentrate on Clinical Psychology and specifically on CBT as I believed in its theories and effectiveness.
What advice would you give to someone on the fence about seeking out therapy services?
It’s not a lifetime commitment, and if you're thinking about it, it's almost certainly worth a try. You can go to just one or two sessions and see if it works for you. A lot of people feel much better even after just the first session. Ultimately our goal is to help improve quality of life.
